2004 is the Year the First Presbyterian Church, Kilgore, Texas
Congregational Members
pledged and completed reading the Bible
through completely. Certificates were received at the
end of that year. This was truly a shared memorable
congregational experience.
The Book of Books
I entered the world's great library doors;
I crossed their acres of polished floors;
I searched and searched their stacks and nooks,
And settled at last on the Book of books. -Anon.
I have found the Book of the Law in the house of the Lord.
2 Kings 22:8
We, the members of First Presbyterian Church, Kilgore, Texas adopted a program that we all called " 2004 - The Year of the Bible." The centerpiece for our program was a challenge to everyone to read through the entire Bible in one year (2004).
Our hope is that those of you who completed this goal will join us as we continue, Holding Forth the Word of Life! That you will continue making the Scripture part of your life this coming year, and the next year, and beyond.
We are all extremely busy, and some such plan can be very valuable in helping us to focus on our Lord and Savior in the midst of our hectic days and weeks. You might want to make some changes in your plan for 2005.
| Star over again with another translation of the Bible. | |
| Choose to read through only one of the Testaments and/or the Psalms for the coming year. |
Thank all of you who participated.

What Bible stories do you associate with the pictures below?

One of the first questions most people ask about participating in The Year of the Bible is what version of the Bible should I read? There is no one version that is best for all people! Below are listed some of the best translations for all-around use, along with several others worth considering.
New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)
This revision of the tried-and-true Revised Standard Version is probably the best all-around literal translation available today. It was translated by a team of scholars from the mainline churches. It reads easily. The translators have eliminated archaic English words and structures and attempted to employ gender-inclusive language whenever possible. This is the Bible you will find in our pews.
New International Version (NIV)
Produced 25 years ago, this version falls between a literal translation and a paraphrase. Translated by a strong team of evangelical scholars, it is less concerned with a word-to-word translation because it seeks to capture the sense or feeling of the words and phrases in the original languages. The result is a fluid, rich translation, a good one for devotional reading and for study.
Others worth considering:
Good News Bible (GNB)
This is one to consider if you want to read a version that has a simpler, more colloquial style than the one that you normally use. Also called Today's English Version (TEV), it is a careful translation putting the original languages into contemporary American idiom. It can be a very useful translation for general or devotional reading as well as for reading with children. This is the version that we present to our rising 4th graders.
The Message
This paraphrase by Presbyterian pastor Eugene Peterson likewise attempts to put the Bible into contemporary American language. It is too colloquial to be used for Bible study, but comparing it with another, more literal version can provide insights into the meaning of a passage. It is also good for devotional reading.
King James Version (KJV)
The KJV is not recommended for this program. Even though many people believe it is the most beautiful of all English translations and cannot be surpassed in its renditions of passages like the Twenty-third Psalm, its language is now antiquated which may make the challenge of reading through the entire Bible too difficult from the start.
An extremely versatile on-line study site. Browse, study, and search the Bible in 17 versions, including 'Young's Literal Translation'; also, has the option of using either the KJV or RSV keyed to 'Strong's Concordance. The site also provides a large selection of study tools.
- Interlinear Bible
- The ability to compare 2 translations of scriptural verse at the same time.
- 12 different Commentaries keyed to the verse or chapter that you are studying.
- 4 various Concordances
- 6 Bible Dictionaries
- A scriptural Encyclopedia
- 2 Lexicons(RSV) - Offers the option of Audio which is nice and large print- different languages, offers study tools and a discussion forum, as well as a search.
Seven reasons to make 2008- The Year of the Bible reading commitment:
Participate in a joint project with a common goal and experience
a stronger sense of Christian fellowship and unity.
Everyone agrees that The Bible is important.
Read through the entire Bible on a systematic basis.
It will help you "get into" The Bible.
Draw strength and encouragement for your daily life.
How else will you read about God's gift to us in Jesus Christ?
Become familiar with the book that has influenced the lives of millions
from ancient times to the present.
At First Presbyterian Church Kilgore we are "Holding Forth the Word Of Life" where
the Bible is "a lamp to our feet and a light to our path.
